One last RT behind-the-scenes moment...

In addition to representing as an author at RT, I was also
a production assistant for the fabulous Miss Media Productions
(Thank you, Morgan, for this one)
In that vein, here's my other favorite RT shot:

Yep.  Nothin' says "Don't mess with me" like red velvet and a camera in an attack pose.

Behind the Scenes #2 Live from RT!

Hello from the Romantic Times convention in PA!

It's been a crazy few days with lots of panels, discussions, awards ceremonies, business meetings, self-promotion and a whole lot of crazy costumes (definately a fun part)

To get a peek at the adventures, my friends Liz Maverick and Marianne Mancusi have posted RT video blogs at their Rebels of Romance page, beautifully captured by the talented Miss Media Productions. It may be a where's waldo moment, but you can see me in the first video for a few seconds at my publisher's booth, Crescent Moon Press, in my attempt at a Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica out-of-uniform costume.

RT has been a great way to make new friends, learn more about the industry, pitch to high-profile editors and promote my upcoming novella Dark Nest!

(plus wear some great costumes, tonight was the vampire ball - yum)

I've learned that people are more likely to take your promotional materials from your basket if there's chocolate involved.

"Get Your Ghost" Ghost Glasses?

WOAH!

Ever wonder what it would be like to have Ghostbusting eyewear? Spectral Spectacles?

Well the folks over at Ghoststudy.com did, and they're working on some projects...

I quote directly:

"SEE GHOSTS WITH SPECIAL EYE GLASSES

We are working on a type of eye glasses that will allow the wearer to see certain types of supernatural beings. If the individual is wearing these eye glasses in a haunted location, that person will see ghosts! Particularly the shadow ghosts that you normally can only see out of the corner of your eye. The principle is relatively simple and with the proper funding, they can be tested in several haunted locations throughout the USA."

Just definately don't wear them as a fashion statement.

Wow.

I dunno about you guys, but, hey sign me up.

Think I could hook up my old plastic View Master with the little circular paper disks with slides and modify those into ghost glasses too? See many ghosts in Technicolor settings via the press of a lever! Or maybe I could retrofit my plastic 3-D glasses from the re-release of Nightmare Before Christmas, who knows...

DARK NEST's Gothic architecture glossary

I use a great deal of architectural terms in my futuristic, psychic novella DARK NEST (2009 Prism Award Winner, novella category), which primarily takes place on a spaceship built to resemble the Notre Dame Cathedral in France, a Cathedral in the Gothic architectural tradition.

Beautiful, isn't it? Imagining something like that in space? I couldn't resist. That's why we're writers, to do crazy stuff like that. (While it isn't Notre Dame that the cover artist Maythe Carpentino used on Dark Nest's cover, it's still Gothic architecture being depicted.) The biggest Gothic architectural signifyer is the arches. Gothic arches come to a point rather than a rounded arch.

I refer to many of the architectural details in the narrative of the story in order to best describe the ship.

While doing my research, I used this great site: http://www.elore.com/Gothic/Glossary/components.htm

The glossary entries that follow here are directly taken, verbatim, from that website.

* AMBULATORY : A continuous isle which wraps a circular structure or an apse at its base. Designed for use in Processions.

* CRYPT : The rooms below the cathedral designated as burial chambers.

* FLYING BUTTRESS: A masonry support branching from the sturdy piers and vertical Standing buttresses. Their role is to transfer the great weight of the vaulted roofs off to this more solid support of the firmly set abutments. In French: "arc boutant."

* LANCET WINDOW: A tall, narrow window which terminates in a pointed apex.

* NAVE : The central area of the western branch of a cathedral, bordered by Aisles. The center of a church or cathedral, intended for seating of parishioners.

* TRACERY : Located throughout Gothic cathedrals, tracery adds much to the distinctive style of Gothic ornament. The variety of Tracery patterns within these cathedrals is nearly endless. Their interlacing lines are incorporated into vaults, walls, columns, windows and the woodwork of the screens.

* TRANSEPTS : The north and south projecting extensions of a Cruciform style church or cathedral, crossing at right angles to the greater length.

SEA-FOUND video interview!

Behind the Scenes!

So MISS MEDIA PRODUCTIONS gave me a wonderful opportunity to do a video interview where I talk a bit about writing and marketing short work. This interview specifically focuses on my twisted lil' ghost story SEA-FOUND, available as a free download from Crescent Moon Press!

"Get Your Ghost..."

Wheeeeee!

Here goes the first installment of "Get Your Ghost..." Where we explore ghostly-ghoulie-great trivia, news, and tidbits from the supernatural side of the tracks.

We begin with her highness of the American icon; the Statue of Liberty, dedicated in 1886. Well, not her exactly. Her island.

This entry utilizes sources: "Ghosts of New York City" by Therese Lanigan-Schmidt, published by Schiffer, her source for her Liberty Island entry: "Ghostly Beacons: Haunted Lighthouses of North America"

Did you know the Statue of Liberty was the first electrically lit lighthouse in the United States and remained so until the year 1903? Well I didn't! Learn something new every day. Well I hope to.

Liberty Island began as Bedloe's island and had been used as a smallpox quarantine station. In the year 1800, Fort Wood was erected on the island (walls remaining as framing for Lady Liberty's pedestal)

Beginning in 1825, Sgt. Gibbs and Carpenter, a recruit, began a long and extensive search for something on the island. Treasure. (insert intense beat of musical score here).

Yes, Treasure left in the wake of the former privateer, infamous pirate, murderer, stockpiler of wealth, etc, Captain Kidd who had been active all around New York Harbor. Kidd was executed in 1701 but rumors of the ghosts he left behind hung on in Bedloe. Pirates were said to toss murdered crewmen down into a treasure hidey-hole so their ghosts would haunt the booty.

A psychic told Gibbs and Carpenter that during the next full moon, to look for a particular rock, and use a witch-hazel divining rod (my kingdom for a metal detector) to find the treasure.

The branch dipped along the rocky shoreline. Digging several feet down, Gibbs and Carpenter struck gold! Well, a trunk.

And that's when the ghost came in. Boo! (clang of tension-inducing music) With a lightning flash, and a "pressure" (I'm not sure what that means, maybe seeing ghosts makes your ears pop?) they saw a frightening figure and started screaming like little girls. When Fort Wood guards came running, Gibbs was unconscious and Carpenter was captured while running away. The men were turned over for questioning since they were out way past their bedtime. They told the sergeant that a demon-like form rose from the earth, breathed sulfur, and glided around; obviously a dead pirate on booty-stealin' guard, and swore to it in a signed affidavit.

The end. Or... is it?

(Problem is, my sources gave no resolution on where the treasure went. That's what I want to know. Any conjectures anyone? Hard facts?)

Like ghost stories? So do I! You can read one I dreamed up and published over at the Glade at Crescent Moon Press, it's a twisted lil' ghost story called Sea-Found and it is a FREE download:

"Bunny thinks..."

Hola blogosphere,

I am the proud owner of a rescued rabbit named Persebunny, Queen of the Underchair, (yes, a pun on the goddess). I love to try and imagine the thoughts of an adorable creature that is scared of absolutely everything. Here she is in all her glory:

So sometimes, you will hear Persebunny reports, as "Bunny thinks..."
